Established in 1984, The Humane Society for Hamilton County, or HSHC, is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit charitable organization operated by a board of directors. Hamilton County, Indiana’s only animal control facility and Humane Society — all under one roof. The shelter is open admission.. The county funds general care for a shelter animal for the first seven days it resides at the facility. Within that time frame, the goal is to find an owner or wait for one to come forward to claim the stray
animal. If an owner has not been identified within seven days, the animal’s ownership is transferred to the HSHC. From day eight, the HSHC assumes all financial responsibility for an animal’s care until the animal is placed in an adoptive home. The HSHC does not euthanize due to space limitations and does not place an arbitrary time limit on the animals in its care.
